One of the objectives of the Research Lifecycle Programme’s (RLP) Highly Restricted Data project (‘Project S’) is to deliver services to enable researchers to run projects that handle confidential or personal information.

As part of this, a SafePod was recently installed in the Main Library. A SafePod is a secure physical room which meets the security requirements for working with data providers, such as the Office of National Statistics. This includes a door control access system, CCTV and a separate secure storage area for IT equipment. The SafePod is also wheelchair accessible and includes a height adjustable desk.

The SafePod service, which will be launched in autumn 2021, will allow researchers to access secure datasets from participating data centres across the UK. Currently access has been agreed with the following data centres:

• Office of National Statistics (ONS)
• UK Data Service
• SAIL Databank

Additional data centres are expected to join as soon when the service is up and running.

The implementation of the SafePod was made possible from a successful funding bid to the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). It is part of the SafePod Network funded by ESRC, which is part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).
